How to Track Costco and Sam’s Club Gift Card Balances
The math on a discounted gift card only works if you spend it. A $100 restaurant card for $80 at Costco is a 20% discount — right up until it sits in a kitchen drawer for eight months and you forget which restaurant it was even for.
Buying in bulk makes this worse, not better. Five cards from one Costco run all look the same in a drawer: same rack, same laminated backing, no way to tell at a glance which one still has $60 on it and which one is already spent.
The actual failure mode
It is rarely “I lost the card.” It is “I have the card, I just don’t know if it still has money on it, so I paid with a debit card instead and dealt with the gift card later.” Later usually means never.
The second failure mode is expiration — or the store-branded pseudo-expiration where a card is technically valid forever but you have genuinely forgotten it exists by the time a year has passed.
What actually fixes it
The fix is not a spreadsheet you’ll stop updating in a week. It’s having every card’s balance somewhere you’ll actually look — your phone, at the register, in the ten seconds before you pay.
In Wallyo, you photograph or scan each card once when you get home from Costco or Sam’s Club. The retailer, card number, and barcode are read off the photo automatically, encrypted, and kept on your phone — not uploaded anywhere as plain text. If you bought several cards for the same store, they group into one deck so you can see all of them and their balances at a glance instead of five identical-looking cards.
At checkout, Wallyo’s full-screen register mode raises your phone’s brightness and shows a scannable barcode — no digging through a bag for the physical card. After you pay, you record what’s left, so the balance you see next time is the balance that’s actually there, not a guess.
If a card has a use-by date, Wallyo flags it as it gets close, so it’s the one you reach for first — instead of discovering it a month after it would have mattered.
One habit, not a system
The whole point is that this takes less effort than losing track does. Photograph the cards once. Check the app before a Costco or Sam’s Club run to see what you’re already sitting on before buying another one. That’s the entire habit.
